There are many people out there asking if the Cubs are actually any good or if they have simply benefited from an easy early schedule. There is some truth in this question, as they have played 12 of their 20 games against teams with losing records, 6 against the Pirates alone. When they have played quality teams, they lost 2 of 3 to the Brewers, lost 2 of 3 to the Phillies, BUT- they took both games against the Mets over the last two days. So where does that leave them?
I believe we're going to get a very good indication of that over the next 17 games. First of all, 11 of the next 14 games are on the road, with the one home series against the rival Brewers. They will have to start on the road against the defending NL Champions Rockies, then go to Washington, then the Brewers at home, then at St. Louis and then at Cincinnati. There is no breather once they get home after that, though, as they'll have to play the Diamondbacks, who currently have the best record in baseball. This is NOT an easy stretch!
The good news- We'll have a very good idea of exactly how good the Cubs are 17 games from now.
